Alaces Jewel is a current graduate student at the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego) studying Integrated and Social Media. As an undergraduate at the same university, she double majored in communication studies and vocal music performance and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in May 2021.
As she nears the end of her advanced certificate, Alaces Jewel hopes to continue her studies into the Strategic Communication Master of Arts program, also at SUNY Oswego. She decided to continue her studies due to her involvement on campus and after speaking at the Student Involvement Awards in May 2022.
“We are the organizations that we go to at night after class and on the weekends. We are the jobs that we work on campus. We are the positions that we step into in order to guide one another. We are the events that we invite our friends to in order to support one another.”– Alaces Jewel at the Student involvement Awards (April 2022)
This also stemmed from Alaces’ experience joining the music and service fraternity, Mu Beta Psi, after receiving their Sweetheart Award in her senior year. She had known people in the organization throughout her undergraduate years, but noticed how much her Brothers in the organization were struggling with upholding older traditions from pre-covid, transitioning back to in-person functions, and communicating with each other and at the national level. Alaces knew she could create a thesis out of this, and thus started her idea:
You Are Your Community: a Deep Dive into Student Organizations, their Structures, and Student Development Through Leadership
Alaces is still waiting on the school’s decision on her acceptance, but she hopes to create kits that aid professional development and promote community building through interpersonal communication and clear organizational structures.
Growing up, Alaces studied classical voice and musical theatre. She went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia Arts High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts for vocal music in New York City, and performed a variety of music growing up. After graduating high school, she decided to major in communication studies but soon realized how much music was still a part of her. In her second year of college, she declared her music double major. From there, she also grew a love for teaching music theory, and thus began an idea of being a music educator. Alaces spends her free time continuing to study music with the hopes of being a music educator in the far future. Although she graduated from the music department at SUNY Oswego, Alaces still remains a reliable teaching assistant and tutor for the faculty and students. Even though she is not currently studying music or in any productions, Alaces plans on getting a Masters in music education when she is a little older since her primary instrument, voice doesn’t fully develop until the age of 25.
Alaces’ other passions include content creation and social media strategy. She loves creating media ranging from photos and flyers, to podcasts and video productions. Throughout most of high school and undergrad, she was active in many clubs that she ran the social media pages for, and that all came in handy in some of Alaces’ professional work. Alaces has always had a separate passion for sharing stories, especially ones that feature Asian voices. As a proud Filipino-American, Alaces also loves giving back to her community, and storytelling is one of her core ways of doing so.
In the future, Alaces hopes to find a way to continue doing all of the things she loves. Her love for the stage has never faded, but her love for creating content and storytelling through media continues to grow with each project she is a part of.
